Open hearts. Open minds. Open doors.
Our Purpose:
The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.
The United Methodist Women meet the 4th Tuesday of each month (except February, June, July and December) in the Jones Fellowship Hall at 10:30 AM.

·                Our Annual Picnic with the United Methodist Men was again a fun and special time to gather together! The food was outstanding and the fellowship even better. And this year it was so helpful to have Circle 6 monitor the drinks and clean up.
·                Our picnic was a good follow-up to Annual Conference. Many of us talked about the uplifting Ordination Service in which our Pastor David Vaughan, and Dean and Linda Rickabaugh’s Mark, received their stoles in recognition of becoming an Elder. Of course, there were 30 others, too.
·                Speaking of Annual Conference, the Mission Kits for Conference report is as follows:
Birthing Kits, 3,991; Health Kits, 19,151; Layettes, 1,784; and School Kits, 11,586. We didn’t reach our goal at Thrasher, but we still had a good showing of 252!
·                We are in the midst of another election year in our country. But it is also an election year for our Thrasher UMW Unit! Please consider serving as an officer or Mission Coordinator for this wonderful group that calls itself UMW. You will be so blessed by meeting many new women across the District and state, and you will get a new appreciation for all the hard work done by this group. Our Nominating Committee is Jackie Minnix, Sandra Lowe and Penny Cronise. Those of us serving now will be more than willing to help new people with their job!
·    You have the opportunity to go to the School of Christian Mission at the Blackstone Conference and Retreat Center (formerly VUMAC), this year called “Mission Encounter 2012”. Studies include “Haiti: Challenges and Hopes”; “Immigration in the Bible”; and “Poverty”. The sessions are either during the week or on the weekend. The weekday school is July 30 – Aug 2, or the weekend is July 27 – 29. This event is open to everyone, so you may want to take your husband, child or grandchild. There will be a youth study and a children’s study. And, as a bonus, our Thrasher UMW has a scholarship for a member! (This was how Emily Armentrout got involved!)
This school is sponsored by the United Methodist Women along with the Conference Board of Global Ministries.
Please pray about this and if you’d like to go, just let one of our Thrasher UMW officers know or pick up a flyer in the office.
Our next meeting is on Tuesday, August 28
10:30 AM in Jones Hall

World Thank for 2012
·               July – Independence Day! A coin for each time you hear our National Anthem. And for August – it’s hot! A coin for each scoop of ice cream you eat. (If you don’t eat ice cream, how about a coin for each iced drink!)
·                We will still accept your recipes for our cookbook. Shirley Calhoun will be taking them by email at, or you can give handwritten copies to any member of the committee. These are Shirley Calhoun, Jan Dickens, Chick Graves, JoAnn Shepherd, Betty Shipp and Jeannie Wicks. Please include your phone number, not to be published, so we can reach you if we have questions.
·                We are looking for another someone to serve on our Christmas Luncheon Committee. Please see Jan Dickens or Suzanne Bell – we need you!
·               Circle Leaders – encourage your ladies to submit recipes for our cookbook. We need a lot more in order to make it worthwhile!
·                Keep Reading – Don’t forget – your reading program lists need to be in to JoAnn by August 19, so catch up. Or, maybe you can read some extra books for a more advanced plan since the weather is so hot!

·             Our Mission Crafters Quilters are taking a break during July and August. We will resume on Tuesday, September 4, so put us on your calendar now!  The quilters group grew out of our Mission Crafters group, and began meeting on February 7. Since then we have delivered 14 twin size quilts to the Rescue Mission and have 5 or 6 more to deliver soon. We also have a few baby quilts that will go to the Mission or to another local shelter. We have received donations of cash for batting and fabric for tops and backs. We thank all who contributed to this cause.
I recently ran across this Scripture that well defines the intent and mission of our Mission Crafters: “And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that by always having enough of everything, you may share abundantly in every good work.” 2 Corinthians 9:8.
Those of us who regularly attend and work seem to be in agreement that we are greatly blessed!
